CD Review: '100 Smokes to Kununurra'
There is an unmistakable melodic langour about this album. It drips with that sweet, tropical drawl we all know, (or wish we knew), and never seems to be in a hurry. More than that, '100 Smokes to Kununurra' is a sparse, blues influenced, largely acoustic collection of documentary songs about life in the north. It chronicles human frailties and natural wonders, and name drops a virtual atlas of FNQ. Gav Dear's laid back vocals and whimsical lyrics drive this album through it's various dips and turns, from charming opener, Laura, to the cautionary Down & Out In Cairns, to the delightful nonsense of Happy Song and the chugging roadtrain of Bruce Hwy. The production throughout is unfussed, the sound simple and muscular. '100 Smokes to Kununurra' is no mere token effort; if you like raw, evocative Oz country/blues you should check this out.
